Last weekend we took a quick three day trip to The Big Easy. The original plan was a couple days at the annual Jazz Festival (which has a number of classic rock and chart topping headliners as well). Turns out 1) that most of the bands we most wanted to see were the second weekend and 2) there were forecasted thunderstorms every evening of our visit, which would prove to turn the festival grounds into (more…)
We just got back from a 10 day Thanksgiving holiday in Playa del Carmen and Merida. Since Southwest Airlines just opened up flights to Cancun earlier in the year, we were able to cash in around 20k points and fly into the area for free (the second ticket was free with the companion pass). Our 2013 fall trip this year was new england, a place that Mayne’s never real spent time in (apart from NYC) and that Elisa has only spent a little time in. So we were both excited! The timing was with the intent to see as many of the famous fall foliage colors as possible, but we were a few weeks early apparently. It’s our one year wedding anniversary and so we settled on a relaxing beach trip! Mayne’s parents gave us timeshare points for a free hotel (Westin Lagunamar in Cancun), so the price was right too (thanks Mom & Jim!!). The Westin was incredible – perfect views, good location, amazing pool (biggest I have ever swam in) and a wade up tiki bar which was pricey but fun. We hopped an AirAsia flight from Bangkok to Bali (Bangkok we’ll be back!). After reading some discussion online about how crowded, tacky and expensive the main tourist areas around Denpasar and Kuta are, we opted for a more laid-back atmosphere at the Legong Keraton Beach Hotel about 25 min shuttle from all the action. Our hotel was simple, but clean. The views from the lawn of the pounding surf was fantastic, although the beaches in the area were (more…)
Our first stop in our SE Asia tour was Bangkok, one of the hubs of all travel in the area. Flights from the US seem mostly to arrive real late at night – which seems convenient for the city’s hotels – and ours was no exception at 11pm arrival. Following a nice snooze, we hit the ground running the next morning. Since this trip was sort of celebration of Mayne’s leaving the public accounting world (more…)
